Put the corrector on a clean, dry foot, place the separator between the big toe and the second toe, keep the cushion over the bony bump, then fasten the strap around the ball of your foot. The right tension feels like a light pull, not pain. Start with 30 minutes a day and build up gradually over a week, and if you feel tingling or the toe changes colour, take it off straight away and loosen it.
Most of the complaints we hear in the first week have nothing to do with the product itself — they're about how it's worn: too tight, worn for long hours from the first day, or the cushion in the wrong place. This guide takes you through it step by step, so you start right and feel the difference sooner. (The steps are the same whether you call it a big-toe corrector, a toe corrector or a toe spacer.)
Before you start: preparation
- A completely clean, dry foot. Moisture makes the silicone slip and increases rubbing.
- Trim your nails if they're long, so they don't press on the separator.
- Check your skin: if there's an open wound or inflammation over the bump, wait for it to heal before you wear the corrector.
- Know which piece goes on which foot: with the all-day corrector, each piece of the pair is made for one foot.
How to put it on: the all-day (day) corrector
- Slide the silicone separator between the big toe and the second toe, so it sits comfortably in the gap without pushing the second toe hard.
- Keep the gel cushion right over the bony bump, on the inner side of the foot. This is exactly where your shoe rubs.
- Wrap the strap around the ball of your foot (the wide part just before the toes) and fasten it.
- Take a couple of steps and check that the corrector doesn't slip and that the cushion is still over the bump.
- Put on your sock, then your shoe. If the shoe now feels too tight, try a shoe with a wider toe box.
How to put it on: the home (night) corrector
- Sit down with your foot resting on the floor or the bed.
- Fasten the big-toe part first, around the toe itself.
- Fasten the strap around your foot and make sure the flexible hinge lines up with the big-toe joint.
- Adjust the tension until you feel the big toe being pulled gently toward straight, without pain.
- Move your foot a little: the flexible hinge should move with you without squeezing the toe.
How tight should it be?
The simple rule: you can slide one finger under the strap easily. If you can't, it's too tight. Signs that the tension isn't right:
| Sign | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Tingling or pins and needles in the big toe | It's too tight and pressing on your circulation | Take it off straight away and put it back on looser |
| The toe turns white or bluish | Too much pressure | Take it off and don't wear it until the colour is back to normal |
| The corrector slips as you walk | The strap is too loose or your foot is damp | Dry your foot and tighten the strap one notch |
| Slight redness that fades within half an hour | Normal in the first days | Carry on for the same time until it disappears |
| Sharp pain in the joint | The angle is too strong for your case | Loosen it and shorten the time |
Schedule for the first week
Your foot needs time to get used to it. The schedule we recommend:
| Day | Time per day |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | 30 minutes |
| 3–4 | 1 to 2 hours |
| 5–6 | 3 to 4 hours |
| 7 onward | As comfortable: the day corrector during working hours, and the night corrector up to all night |
If at any stage you feel discomfort, go back to the previous step's time for two days, then carry on. The difference between night and day wear, and when to use each, we explain in a separate article.
Common mistakes
- Pulling it tight in the hope of faster results. Extra tension doesn't speed up correction; it causes pain and makes you stop. Wearing it every day matters more than how tight it is.
- Wearing it for long hours from the first day. This is the most common cause of discomfort in the first week.
- Wearing it on a wet foot, or one with cream on it. It slips and rubs.
- Wearing it on and off. Two days on and a week off gives no result. Alignment improves with consistency.
- A tight shoe over the corrector. A corrector doesn't make up for a shoe that squeezes your toes.
Care and washing
Hand-wash the corrector in lukewarm water with mild soap every 3 to 4 days of use, or more often if you sweat a lot. Don't put it in the washing machine or in hot water, and dry it in the shade, away from the sun and heaters, so the silicone keeps its flexibility.
How Nahleh's corrector helps
The Vitella all-day corrector has an adjustable strap and a gel cushion over the bump, so you can set the tension to suit you and wear it inside your shoe all day. It comes in one size that adapts to most feet, and as a pair. For resting at home, the advanced home corrector gives a firmer hold, with a flexible hinge that moves with your foot.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours a day?
Start with 30 minutes for the first two days and build up gradually over a week. Once you're used to it, wear the day corrector during your hours of walking and work, and the home corrector in the evening or all night. Wearing it every day matters more than the number of hours.
Can I sleep in it from the first day?
Better not. Use the first week to get used to it, for short periods while you're awake, so you learn the tension that's comfortable for your foot. Then start with two hours before bed and build up to the whole night.
What should I do if it hurts?
Take it off, let your foot rest, and put it back on with less tension and for a shorter time. Slight redness in the first days is normal; tingling, a change in the toe's colour or sharp pain mean it's too tight.
Can I wear it on both feet at the same time?
Yes, if you have a bunion on both feet. The all-day corrector comes as a pair, one piece for each foot. Start both feet on the same schedule so they get used to it together.
